On Tuesday. Israeli mortar shells hit a UN school in Gaza sheltering hundreds of people displaced by Israel's onslaught on Gaza. |
Israel announced on Wednesday that "in order to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip," Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had agreed to adopt a proposal by the security establishment to open "a humanitarian corridor" into the impoverished region.
The move came after Israeli forces hit three UN-run schools, one of which was crowded with refugees, in the Gaza Strip.
Some 43 civilians were killed and 100 wounded when the Israelis attacked a school in Jabaliya, northern Gaza on Tuesday.
Medical officials in Gaza said the civilians had been sheltering at a United Nations school.
Medics say 660 Palestinians, including 215 children and 98 women, have been killed in the Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip.
Gaza emergency services chief Moawiya Hassanein said on Tuesday that more than 2,950 Gazans have been wounded during the Israeli attacks on the impoverished region.
